Is Calvinism or Reformed Doctrine Taking Over Your Church?

Many pastors are closet Calvinists who know that their congregations are not yet ready to understand Reformed doctrine, that is, until they can instill certain half-truths that must be accepted before a church becomes Calvinistic.

It is certainly inevitable that any pastor who reads theology, who has connections, who has a theological degree, will have become aware of Calvinism at some point along the way. At the very least every pastor will be asked at some time, by someone, somewhere, “What is Calvinism?”or will be given a little booklet by an advocate for Calvinism. In fact, any pastor or elder who is unfamiliar with the threat of Calvinism is dangerously ignorant and is not adequate to defend the flock against error.

Calvinism or Reformed theology is very popular. All popular systematic theologies and commentaries on Romans are written by Calvinists.

Here are some signs that your pastor or church is adopting Reformed doctrines regarding salvation.

An emphasis is made in the preaching and teaching on:

  • Sinners are not able to believe unless God first causes it
  • Faith is a gift from God, in the sense that God causes people to have faith
  • The grace of God is the gospel
  • People are unable to hear God’s Word
  • God is not God unless His will is done/ God cannot fail to save all that He purposes to save
  • The church needs to avoid a man-centered gospel and “return” to a God-centered gospel
  • The marvel is that God loved Jacob, not that He hated Esau
  • The ultimate purpose of God is to glorify Himself or the greatest attribute is His sovereignty
  • Quotes from John Calvin, Martin Luther, and contemporaries like John Piper
  • An emphasis is made on evident signs of God being at work in a person’s life (e.g. going to church, reading the Bible, doing things that are Christian, etc.), rather than, accepting “a mere personal confession” of a conversion experience

There is the neglect of the following from the pulpit. The pastor avoids saying specifically to the congregation:

  • “God loves you”
  • “Jesus died for you”
  • “Believe in Jesus and you will become born again”
  • “Calvinism is wrong” – Beware – many Calvinists will preach against Hyper-Calvinism, but that is not enough. It is easy to burn a straw man!

There is the neglect of specifically presenting to the lost the following:

Matthew 7:7,8 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.”

Meaning, that there should be a real offer presented to sinners that says to them that if they ask, seek, knock, then it will be opened to them. That they really have an opportunity to be saved if they seek it. Calvinists don’t go there because they teach that sinners cannot and will not unless God causes them to be saved.

Is it Really all that Important?

Useless Shepherds who intentionally sit on the fence, so as to not offend the Reformed in their church, will say, “The emphasis the Calvinist makes on the Sovereignty of God is not a bad thing is it?”

It is important for two reasons. The first reason is that it is about our view of God and the second reason is that this necessarily impacts our view of ourselves.

Our View of God

The Reformed understanding of the Sovereignty of God is that what is is the will of God. They worship a god who wills the existence of evil for his glory.

The Lord’s prayer makes it clear that God’s will is not being done on earth and that we are to pray that it will be done [Matthew 6:10]. The Scripture says that the sins of men are not the will of God, nor did it enter into the mind of God that they should do such things [Jeremiah 32:35], while Calvinism teaches that God predetermined every sinful act and that men should necessarily do sinful things!

Psalm 50:21 “These things you have done and I kept silence; You thought that I was just like you; I will reprove you and state the case in order before your eyes.”

Our View of Ourselves

The Reformed understanding of the Sovereignty of God is a form of hypocrisy. People become invested in this emphasis because they like the new way of thinking about themselves. This is evident in the pervasive spirit of arrogance and pride in a view of God that they can then glory in. Doctrinal error always has some appeal to the flesh and Calvinism very much appeals to the flesh because it about a false sense of glory.

It is a form of hypocrisy in that adherents misrepresent themselves by misrepresenting God’s truth. Calvinists boast that they are the ones who honor and glorify God. For more information about this go to The Hypocrisy of Calvinism or watch my video Calvinism Says it Honors God.

A Few Scripture Passages Showing that God’s Will can be Thwarted

  • Isaiah 59:1,2 Behold, the LORDS hand is not so short that it cannot save; nor is His ear so dull that it cannot hear. But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear.
  • Matthew 23:37 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling.”
  • Luke 7: 30 But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected God’s purpose for themselves, not having been baptized by John.
  • Acts 7:51 “You men who are stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears are always resisting the Holy Spirit; you are doing just as your fathers did.”

Ask these questions:

Why Are Good Pastors Getting Caught Up in Reformed Doctrine?

  • They are presented with arguments that seem to be Scriptural [Calvinism Says it is Scriptural]
  • The most popular Systematic Theologies and Commentaries are Reformed [See an example in: Calvinism Says Faith is a Work]
  • They go to seminaries, and to week-end seminars and retreats, where popular Reformed teachers introduce them to a teaching that results in the following:
  • There is a simple answer why people are not saved, which answers a deep-seated question about our generation
  • There is an organized effort by Reformed churches to plant like-minded churches and to spread this message that is counted more profound than the gospel promise itself!

I have written a book entitled Recanting Calvinism, which provides numerous counter arguments to the Reformed position. My most recent book Take Up Your Cross: Our Only Power to Live and Walk by the Spirit is a fruition of coming out of Calvinism.

wow this article really is disheartening and quite unfair in your presentation I have no words sad just sad from beginning to end to have such a disregard towards fellow Christians who follow TULIP brother where is your fruit in all this?

    • I understand that my words will be sad and upsetting to Calvinists. Many people who have been influenced by the error of Calvinism experienced a dark period in those early days, as they then questioned whether or not they were one of the elect themselves. The reason for the negative experience was that the object of their faith went from simple faith in Jesus to the false object of faith that Calvinism proclaimed, namely that what really determined their salvation was a mysterious and impersonal ‘unconditional election’ of themselves in eternity past. Addressing error and the making known the road back to truth is always like crossing a deep river in which you cannot feel the bottom for a while until you are over on to the other side. The experience causes all sorts of feelings to come up, but do not close your ears to the truth. You ask what fruit is there in all of this? It is the wonderful fruit of exposing darkness and bringing my brothers and sisters back onto the blessed shore of the true gospel.

Brother, I am praying that the Lord will open up your eyes in order that you may see all the damage that stealth Calvinist are doing to the body of Christ across the country.

Our church is now recovering due to the damage that a stealth “pastor” did to it.  He followed the stealth Calvinist playbook to the letter and brought the attendance down from 300 to close to 100 each Sunday.  It is only through the grace of God that he did not take over the church.   To make things worse, this was the second church that he all but destroyed.  I am happy to report that first church has recovered and recently completed a new building program.   Our church is also recovering and healing through prayer and action.  We are committed to taking the Gospel to our community and the world.

I ask you to do some research and see how stealth Calvinist pastors have tried to take over and force Calvinism on the church body.  See how many have been all but destroyed.  I think that God’s word addresses it best from Jeremiah 23:1-2.  It makes it very clear how the Lord will in the end judge these false pastors that are destroying churches.

“Woe to the shepherds who are destroying and scattering the sheep of my pasture!” declares the Lord. Therefore this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says to the shepherds who tend my people: “Because you have scattered my flock and driven them away and have not bestowed care on them, I will bestow punishment on you for the evil you have done,” declares the Lord.

The onus is on the Calvinist commenters to refute specific points of the original post.

Calvinism is simply unbiblical. God wishes none shall perish…. 2 Peter 3:9

Yes he knows who will choose him but he died for all!

Hi, I am feeling very sad seeing the growth and push of calvernism around me. I feel it is distorting the simplicity and the beauty of the Gods true gospel of Jesus Christ.
I wanted to know what caused you to change your view from calvernism?
I am praying for our pastor that through careful search of the scriptures the Lord will reveal the glories of the gospel to him. What was your experience and what would you advise be?
    Thanks Esther

    • Hello Esther, I understand your sadness about the rise of this gospel destroying teaching. Please let me know whatever I may do for you, such as pray and address questions for your help in this matter. You and anyone can email me directly at traditonalbaptistchurch@gmail.com

You asked what caused my view to change. The truth of the General Resurrection is what started the domino effect for me. If all people are raised from the dead then a Calvinist cannot say that Jesus’ death and resurrection has nothing to do with the lost. I then realized that Jesus’ work on the cross and His resurrection actually provides two things for God – (1) a way to save those who have faith in Jesus and (2) a way to perfectly judge the lost, in resurrected bodies, who don’t trust in Jesus. If Jesus did die for everyone, which the General Resurrection proves, then everything else falls apart in Calvinism.

God bless you Esther and press on in love for the truth of the gospel.

I can personally see the influence of Calvinism in the southern baptist church’s. My family and I are looking for a new church currently and we have seen reformed teaching at every place we have visited. Considering leaving the baptist tradition altogether. It’s disheartening but I also believe that Calvinism is harmful to the image of God and leaves is participants wondering if they are elected or not. I hope this movement comes to an end.

    • My heart goes out to you and your family. There are so many things that I also struggle with that is found in Baptist churches that I too almost don’t want to be identified with anything Baptist, but I keep coming back to the doctrinal position historically and therefore I am stuck with this currently negative association. May the Lord encourage you and your family and if you have to experience a sense of isolation I pray that it may only be for a time. May I encourage you to meditate on Psalm 42, as it relates to being on the outside during a time of exile.

This is so sad to see. Our church was practically destroyed by a stealth calvinist. He followed the stealth calvinist playbook to the letter. Our Sunday morning attendance was right at 300 when he became the pastor. Before he left, attendance dropped to close to 100. It is so sad to see this happening in Southern Baptist churches across the country. It was only by the grace of God that this stealth calvinist pastor did not take over the church. Thankfully, we have a strong church family that the Lord has prepared to serve the masses. While many have left, people in the community are starting to come back. What I cannot understand is why are people not standing up more to bring this out in the open. Where is the leadership in the Southern Baptist Convention? We were ignorant of calvinism and never believed that a pastor would intentionally deceive the church body and cause so much damage to the body of Christ.

Thank you for this website and bringing the dangers of Calvinism out into the open and educating those who are not aware of the dangers of Calvinism.

    • Thank you for this very important comment. What an awful time you have been through! Calvinistic Pastors don’t really mind at all if most leave so long as they secure another church because they are affected by their error of thinking that God Himself doesn’t really care about how many are saved. What matters most is the securing of the glory of God and the establishment of a “God-centered work”.

Have you and those with you not fulfilled the Scripture? Rev 2:2 ‘I know your deeds and your toil and perseverance, and that you cannot tolerate evil men, and you put to the test those who call themselves apostles, and they are not, and you found them to be false.’

Through affliction the people of God become stronger and the resolve for nothing but the true gospel becomes refreshed in your hearts. The reason why leadership is failing is addressed on this page above, but I feel your frustration and I acknowledge it. We also live in a time where the error is prevalent.

Please reach out to me if there is anything I can do for you right now. God bless you, Steven
